Detention

A devasting interactive story told via point-and-click adventure gameplay. It's not really a horror game, but the themes are disturbing.

The art direction is superb. Graphics, carefully chosen color palettes, and evocative original music all cohere into a surreal nightmare about youth, despair, hope, love, and guilt. There is some text and dialog, too, but thankfully it's not overdone. The game aims to show rather than to tell.

I have just two minor complaints. First, there's a bit too much of backtracking, especially in the early game. It feels like unnecessary busywork. It seems that for a game like this they should have stuck to something more linear, Second, there are two separate endings, both very much worth watching ... but you would not know this unless you read about it online.
