Firewatch

It's so rare to find a game that so gracefully accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. The thoughtful story, the narrative devices, the contemplative gameplay, the little flourishes of delightful detail, all come together to create an unforgettable experience: a straightforward examination of the psychology of escapism.

It's crucial to have the right expectations in order to enjoy the game fully. In terms of gameplay, I would classify it as a "hiking simulator": for the most part, you can hike to anywhere you want on the map at your own pace, but the story unfolds as it unfolds and you're just along for the ride. There are simple goals to move you along, but they are things to do rather than puzzles. The puzzlement comes from the narrative, layered over the gameplay via outstanding, understated dialog and voice acting. You have some control over the dialog choices, but they're there mostly to assist your identification with the protagonist rather than change the course of the game. You do not choose your own ending.

Speaking of the ending, you might see some reviews complaining about it. I woud like to complain about those complainers! In my view, the ending is exactly right in mood, tone, and execution.
