Get Even
This game gets a thumbs up from me, but I would like to help other potential players calibrate their expectations, because I was at times frustrated by it.
In total you'll experience a humdrum and yet cleverly told story, with really excellent voice acting. But it does seem to drag too long, and does at times get overly dramatic. Nevertheless, it will still manage to keep you on your toes and surprise you.
But, the gameplay. The game often appears like many kinds of games—FPS, stealth FPS, adventure—but at its heart it is a walking simulator: a linear story made of levels which allow for varying degrees of interactivity but in the end your goal is really just to get from point A to point B. This confused me, because in some of the more open levels I thought I had a deeper goal that would require exploration and creative thinking and reward them. But, no, there wasn't anything else I needed to do. If there were obstacles, I had to kill them, sneak past them, or even run past them. But all that mattered was getting to point B.
And that's really fine, as long as you understand that. I often got lost in the tumbleweeds because it felt like I was a protagonist in an "adventure." But exploration just rewards you with collectibles and achievements, nothing that's intrinsic to the game itself. If that sounds good to you, then you would probably like Get Even...
...Except that there those obstacles at times can be quite challenging, and this is from someone who plays quite a bit of FPS-type games. When all I wanted to do was get deeper into the story, I found the lackluster and difficult combat scenes to be frustrating, especially when dying sent me way back to the beginning of the scene.
So, understand what this experience is about, play it on lowest difficulty, go with the flow of the story, and I think you'll have fun. I did despite the frustrations!
Oh, and I should add that I played this game on a 3D projector using Tridef and a user-contributed profile. Looked amazing!
