Nobody Wants to Die
It's flawed, but it does mostly deliver an immersive sci-fi noir with lots of Blade Runner influences.
Graphics and visual design are stunning and do the vast majority of the heavy lifting to make this work. The writing ... less so. And the voice acting is way too melodramatic and feels forced.
Structurally, this is a very cramped game. Despite how beautiful (and big) everything looks, the whole game takes place in only a handful of very small set pieces.
Gameplay is quite innovative but unfortunately not very satisfying. For a detective game it does have some pretty nifty mechanics for finding and following clues. Alas, they are wasted on trivial busywork. You, as a player, will not be solving any puzzles. When it comes down to it you're just going through a series of simple minigames.
And what about the protagonist? Do you at least get to watch him solve puzzles, connect the dots, solve the case? Honestly, it's hard for me to say for sure. The case quickly explodes into a spiderweb of events and motives, with far too many names and allusions. Around the mid-game I lost track of who was who and trying to do what. It wasn't too bad to just tag along and experience the events, but a lot of what this overly intricate plot was trying to convey, well, it wooshed past me.
It's worth noting that this is a "choices matter" game, at least such that it can lead to multiple endings. But this technique isn't used very well. There are lots of trivial choices that don't have much pull to them. Each seems arbitrarily fine. And yet some will close future options to you, and then the game rubs it in by putting a lock icon on them. I don't think I missed out on anything serious, but it's still not my favorite way to play. I want to experience all the content, or at least be given the option to make an informed choice as to where I want the story to go. Here it feels quite random, if not counter-intuitive.
So, there you have it. A mediocre game in many ways, and yet it still gets a thumbs up from me for its ability to convey a compelling dark future.
